Study Permit

A study permit is required for foreign nationals who wish to study in Canada for programs longer than six months. Here are the key requirements for a study permit application:

  • Letter of Acceptance: You must have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. This is the first and most essential document.
  • Proof of Financial Support: Applicants must demonstrate they have enough money to cover tuition fees, living expenses for themselves and any accompanying family members, and return transportation. Acceptable proof can include:
    • Bank statements.
    • Proof of student loans.
    • Scholarship or funding letters.
    • A letter from a sponsor.
  • A Valid Passport or Travel Document: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your study program.
  • Medical Examination: Some students may need to undergo a medical exam, depending on the duration of their stay and the country they are applying from.
  • Police Clearance Certificate: You may be asked to provide a police certificate to show that you have no criminal record.
  • Biometrics: Applicants are often required to submit fingerprints and a photograph at a visa application center.
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): Introduced in January 2024, the PAL is a mandatory document issued by the provincial government of the province where your designated learning institution (DLI) is located. It confirms that the institution meets provincial standards for international students and verifies the legitimacy of the study program. Applicants must request the PAL directly through their DLI, which will coordinate with the provincial authorities.
  • Intent to Leave Canada: You must convince the visa officer that you will leave Canada after completing your studies. Showing ties to your home country (such as employment, family, or property) is crucial.
  • Statement of Purpose: A personal statement explaining your reasons for studying in Canada, how your program aligns with your future goals, and why you chose the specific institution.
  • Pay the Application Fee: There is a processing fee, as well as a separate fee for providing biometrics.
  • Custodian Declaration (for Minors): If you are under 18 years old and studying in Canada without a parent or guardian, you may need to provide proof of a custodian arrangement.

Summary:

Once approved, a study permit allows you to study at the specified DLI for the duration of your program, with the option to work part-time on or off campus under certain conditions. The permit does not grant entry to Canada; applicants may also need a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) depending on their nationality.
